What to see

Notre-Dame Cathedral, whose west front Monet painted more than 30 times, dominates the old town. From there, the Rue du Gros-Horloge leads under the Gros-Horloge, a Renaissance clock on an arch, to the Place du Vieux-Marché, where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. A modern church dedicated to her stands on the square.

The half-timbered streets around Saint-Maclou and the Aître Saint-Maclou, a former plague cemetery, are among the best preserved in France.
